Crowdfunding campaign pays way for children in need to attend Camps on Campus

The Send a Child to Camp campaign launched by Youth Programs in late fall yielded $5,051 — enough to relieve the financial burden for 15 children in need to attend UNC Charlotte’s popular Camps on Campus this summer.

The funds raised will pay the registration fee for each child to participate in one weeklong summer camp of their choice, and includes a meal plan for the week. A typical Camps on Campus camp costs $275 for the week. Meal plans run around $55 and include lunch in Social 704, the dining hall located in the student union on campus.

Camps on Campus Director Taylor Faulkner said addressing the needs of children who may not otherwise be able to attend Camps on Campus has been a goal for a long time.

“We believe all children should be able to experience constructive learning, build essential mentor relationships, and enjoy the many other benefits of UNC Charlotte’s vibrant community, regardless of their families’ financial circumstances,” said Faulkner.

This was the first year for the campaign, made possible with assistance from the UNC Charlotte Division of University Advancement. Look for the campaign to become an annual fall occurrence, with additional smaller fundraising challenges announced throughout the year as well. The end goal is to establish an endowed fund to sustain the mission for years to come.

“We welcome donations at any time and in any amount throughout the year,” said Faulkner. “Every dollar pushes us toward registering one more child into camp.”

Camps on Campus offers fun and educational weeklong opportunities during the summer months for rising 1st through 12th graders. Popular camps include robotics, musical theater, and culinary arts. Last year Camps on Campus welcomed a record 2,000 children onto the UNC Main Campus.
